OATA is recognised as the voice of the aquatic industry by Government agencies, politicians and conservation groups. OATA has proved its effectiveness by succinct lobbying in the "Corridors of Power" and having the threat of damaging legislation removed. As a trade association, OATA has some 750 members in the UK, representing all sectors of the aquatics industry, including importers, manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers. OATA has fought numerous campaigns and championed numerous causes since its formation. Since OATA was formed in 1991 in response to the UK importers fears that the creation of the single market in the EU would be detrimental to the industry, we have cost the industry some $1.2 million USD in subscriptions (in total, not annually). However we have probably saved the UK industry alone, around $150 million USD. One of our many successes was to prevent an EU veterinary group bringing into force a measure, which would have banned the UK from importing koi and goldfish for two years. In addition to active lobbying on a whole range of issues in the UK we have produced comprehensive training materials for members and non-members, discount schemes on merchant credit and debit card rates, electricity and gas, and stakeholder pensions. We have a Code of Conduct, various aspects of which are generally accepted as best practice both by businesses and government.
